New School Completed in Remote Sapa Village
Topas recently managed the construction of new buildings for the Nam Lang B School located in the remote mountains not far from Topas Riverside Lodge.
Back in 2020 August when Topas was looking for a new charity project, Topas Project Manager, Kien, went to Nam Lang B, a Red Dao minority village. He inspected the village school which is currently attended by 26 pupils from 2 – 7 years old. He found it in serious disrepair. . .
Alongside his experience in construction, Kien has very strong relationships with the local authorities of the area – something that is essential to making projects like this work.
After meetings with the local government, Kien set about organising the upgrades and new builds for the school.
The project took place in two stages.
From 2020 September to January 2021 the classrooms were built. Next, from May to July 2021 the kitchen and courtyard were added. After 6 months the new school buildings were constructed, despite the challenges of covid-19, bad weather and difficult roads.
The new school has two class rooms, two teacher rooms, a kitchen, a new gate and a new courtyard with a pretty garden, swing, seesaw and simple exercise equipment. The village now has the standard of school that they had wished for for many years.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hao, one of the school’s teachers said: “The new school is much better than before. It is very beautiful, with nice classrooms, kitchen and a pretty courtyard that is very well combined with surrounding nature.”
She added: “This big change really supports us and our pupils. I believe that the kids will love this school and like to come to study with a happy feeling. And I can see the happiness from parents when they bring their children to school each day.”
